Glasgow, Kentucky, Highland Games

Towards the end of June our founder The Baron of cowdenknowes flew out to the USA to visit his son and family and to attend some Highland games.
The first of these games held at Glasgow, Kentucky, he attended as an honoured guest and others present were Robin O. Blair, LVO, WS, Lord Lyon King of Arms, and Their Graces the Duke and Duchess of Atholl, the Duke is Chief of Clan Murray, also attending was the Barons son Mark Harden of Cowdenknowes Ygr and Romilly Squire of Rubislaw.

These games were open from Friday to Sunday although there were some pre games activities for VIPs on the Thursday before they opened.
The Baron was attending not only as the Baron of Cowdenknowes in his own right but also as representative of our society and Photographs covering his time at these games can be view in the gallery.

The temperature in Glasgow was in the 90’s with humidity even higher this made the act of keeping cool one of high priority especially in full highland dress.
A number of presentations were made to the Baron but one which was particularly special to him was made by Ronald H. Wright president of Caberdancer Graphics, Rebecca Prather Director of sales and Thomas R. Freeman Jr Creative Director who are also the founders of the famous Clan MacBubba and are all personal friends of the Baron. The presentation was of the Barons very first banner which had been produced by ‘Caberancer Graphics’ and had been framed especially for this occasion, this banner is 1 yard square and is not a small item.

This was only part of the presentation as the Baron was also presented with a beautiful day Sgian Dubh of the highest quality, hand made and presented by Kent Swicegood (Armourer) and Melinda Swicegood Director of Highland Blades. Unknown to the Baron he had been tricked into picking this Sgian Dubh from a large selection earlier in the day and he now proudly wears it. This was followed by the further presentation of a scroll signed by each of them pledging their ‘Hands, Hearts and sacred Honour to the house of Harden and to the Baron of Cowdenknowes. The Baron was deeply touched by the thoughts, hard work and above all, genuine feelings behind these presentations and also by yet a further private presentation of a bottle of Scotch, he has since started a whole new Baronial and family tradition with the Banner.

No sooner had this presentation been completed than our Founder was rushed back to the Society of Scottish Armigers tent (His base on the field) to find that the Lord Lyon and the Duke of Atholl were waiting to present him with letters patent, which was an honour that does not come to many and the Baron was for the second time that day taken completely by surprise, this single event is a huge thing to happen in any family and is already spoken of within the family with great pride.

There followed two weeks of rest and relaxation spent with his son, daughter in law and two grand daughters in Atlanta GA and then off to the Franklin NC Festival.
